Grade 2 Not very easy and pleasant for people who normally ride leisure single gear bikes and never experienced the riding gesture on road/mountain bike, but you are quite possible to finish it without too much difficulties if you accept bending your head and waist for hours or receive some shocks from the terrain. We are still mainly cycling on paved roads but more section of off-road/roads paved but broken/macadam/tracks will be included, but luckily, there are not too much climbs to be conquered. Total cycle distance per day is less than 50KM (31miles) and kids (aged 8-13) without sports background is not suggested for a trip under this grade.
Holiday Style: Mountain bike cycling on well paved roads and off road for about 1 hour (slipery and little muddy in raining days).
The tour starts from and also ends in Guilin city, it requires a moderate level of your fitness. If you hate to see commercilized areas and normal attractions full of tourists and buses, this tour will be a good choice as a short exploration to the rural and off-the-beaten part around Guilin. After the first 5KM cycling outside Guilin and views of the peach blossom River, less cars and more old buildings will be found, telling the world the big changes of a Chinese city. We bike beside the canal seeing the orange orchard, grapery, vegetable gardens, river and brooks, we will head to the hidden roads with some undulating or short slopes but accompanied by scenery in peaceful countryside.
Many villages along the road are well-kept and remain as they were over one hundred year ago, we visit the well-known Jiangtouzhou village and have a leisure walk there about half hour, accompanied with lotus, pools, swimming ducks, singing birds, ancient houses, etc.
From research, the buildings in this village are up to 1000 years old. Some seemed to be empty and others looked like they could still have people living in them, some were difficult to tell the difference.
The village is fairly quiet. It’s difficult to know how many houses are occupied. People out working in the fields and enjoy our time at this less commercialized part of Guilin.
After the visit, we keep our cycles to Qingshitan reservoir and finish our cycle there, we will transfered by our van back to Guilin, or we can cycle back while the distance for this tour will be doubled.
A. The water canal may dries up from November, the best time for this cycling is April-October.
B. SPD shoes is ok for this tour before the trekking to see the old village.
C. The Jiangtouzhou village is about 1000 years old and we can walk 30 minutes inside.
D. Thin trousers and long sleeve cycling jersey (or over sleeves at least) is more suitable than short one to protect us from the sunlight while on the bike and help us to protect the disturbing bug living in the grass beside canal.
E. Mosquitoes are common in summer, they bites but NOT carrying any diseases, they just make you itch.
